The word “Narcissist” or Narcissism originated from Greek mythology, where a young man named “Narcissus” fell in love with his image reflected in a pool of water. Narcissism or pathological self-absorption was first identified as a disorder in 1898 by Havelock Ellis and featured in subsequent psychological models, e.g. in Freud's on Narcissism (1914). This disorder was also listed in the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1968, drawing on the historical concept of “Megalomania” (megalomaniacs are generally more concerned with superiority/obsession with power).
The subject of narcissism has intrigued people for centuries, but social scientists now claim that it has become a modern “epidemic”. So what is it, what has led to its increase and is there anything we can do about it?
